I don't think that implicitly setting the screen width would work for a few
reasons:

There could be confusion regarding the final screen width during the boot
sequence if brltyt is started before the screen font is loaded.

Each virtual console can have its own screen width. I don't think it'd be right
for brltty to be continually resizing a console each time it's brought into the
foreground.

A setting like screen width should never be changed unpredictably so the only
time it might make sense for brltty to chagne it is during brltty startup.
That, of course, would only apply to the current console, and even which
console that is is unpredictable if brltty is started during the boot sequence
rather than by the user.
