I think this is a bad idea.  Character "degradation" is unacceptable.  
It would create worse confusion than a hidden cursor.

I'd suggest that you either use 6-dot mode (at least you _know_ dot 7 
and 8 are not supposed to be visible in that case) or use a block 
cursor.
