No, of the device (the USB2Serial adapter).

Not necessarily: it appears because Linux sees it, but that doesn't mean
that it knows how to drive it.

You need the pl2303 module. Isn't it in
/lib/modules/2.6.something/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/pl2303.ko ?
