Hello Debee,
in which file is the brltty entry stored?
I know 2 ways of automatically start brltty In /etc/inittab and in 
/etc/runlevel.conf, which I do.
When started from inittab, brltty runs almost from the beginning of the 
startup procedure. Maybe USB isn't initialized.
In the runlevel.conf it starts immediately before the appearance of the 
login screen. A bit late, but all devices and modules are loaded then.
I'm sorry, but there's no way to avoid the man pages; so look in the 
inittab and runlevel.conf pages for details.
