Please check /var/log/messages for logs which might indicate what the problem
is. You can collect the logs directly into a file by specifying the -e option
and redirecting standard error to that file. Here's an example of what I'm
suggesting:

   brltty -bts -dttyS0 -ldebug -e 2>brltty.log
