[BRLTTY] getting started

Hi,

If I use BRLTTY is it hard to setup? Do I need sighted help to get it 
working? What port does the braille note connect through?

Can I use BRLTTY for the following?

reading and writing email;
irc;
browsing the net;
programming;
reading compile errors;
writing text files;
listening to music;
update my website through ftp;
install software;

Will I be able to do all of this?

Also does BRLTTY work with thunderbird or is Thunderbird a GUI app?
