Thanks. That's of course possible, in which case I stand corrected.

The error message implies that SD wants UTF-8, and I'm quite sure that's what 
brltty is giving it. Were that not true, speaking lines wouldn't work either.

Can an SD person (Jan?) tell me if the spd_char() function expects just one 
UTF-8 character or if it expects a null-terminated string?
