Ok. In principle the next line should be 

serial device opened: /dev/COM1: fd=6

since you said the shell is still working, the computer is not hanged,
and brltty is probably just blocked while opening COM1.  Could you try
the updated version available on 

http://brl.thefreecat.org/brltty/brltty41.zip

which has more debugging?
