At last I found the problem. I did need to have '/bin/brltty
>/outfile.log 2>&1' in the rc.sysinit file to get some output:
/bin/brltty: error while loading shared libraries: libgpm.so.2: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

That file is in /usr/lib, and /usr isn't mounted yet.
