Which protocol are they using?

If it isn't IRC and if you already have an IRC client such as irssi with which
you're familiar, you could try Bitlbee. It's essentially an IRC server that
supports various instant messaging protocols.

If you actually want voice communication, then SIP would be the best protocol
and there are various options available.

Most of the instant messaging clients support a variety of open and
proprietary protocols. If at any point you want to establish a server, XMPP is
your best option.
