[BRLTTY] introduction and a quick question

Hi, everyone.  My name is Doug Smith and I just subscribed to this list in hopes of finding a way to tech up my braille.  I am a life-long braille 
reader and I am ready to start using it with my tech as well.  Here's what I want to know.  

I wish to have a braille input system for my command line debian testing system.  I prefer the command line to the gui environment and use it as much 
as possible.  What I want to know is does brltty have a braille keyboard interface using 6 or 8 dots on the regular keyboard rather than having to 
wait until I get a braille display?  Can I run all my commands just as I do when standard keyboarding?  If so, How do I set this up?  

I also like to make new friends and hope to soon meet everyone on here.  I look forward to doing what I can to help and contribute if possible.
