Hasn't been improved since when? Yes, for 6.0, perhaps not for a long time.
There are some improvements in 6,.1, though.

Perhaps. It depends on how much it relies on things like multi-pass rules.

You can, of course, just point brltty at the LibLouis table itself. Prefix the
absolute path to that table with louis: (which tells brltty to use liblouis).
