Brltty doesn't support typing in contracted braille. For input, only computer
braille is supported. More technically, typing is always based on the currently
selected text table.

For output: There's a six-dot mode setting. If it's off then output is in
computer braille, i.e. it's based on the current text table. If it's on then
output is in literary (contracted) braille, i.e. it's based on the current
contraction table.

You can specify the text table with the -t command line option or via the
text-table brltty.conf directive. You can specify the contraction table with
the -c command line option or via the contraction-table brltty.conf directive.
My opinion is that it's far better to specify what you want within brltty.conf
rather than to mess with command line options in boot scripts.

You can turn on six-dot mode, i.e. you can switch to literary (contractec)
output, with Space+Dots235 (a nemeth 6). You can turn off six-dot mode, i.e.
you can switch to computer (8-dot) braille, with Space+Dots236 (a nemeth 8).
