[BRLTTY] Mutt stops brltty 6.4

Sometimes I will be reading mail and mutt will stall on a message. Nothing I do on that console will have any effect. 
If I go to a console where root is logged in and press a few keys I get the message Brltty 6.4 started. 
I then do killall mutt and return to the  original console to delete all messages.
