[BRLTTY] changing key echo from code

Hi,

As a developer, is it possible to change the key echo setting (the echo of typed characters) from code, using the brlapi or other.  I want to be able to change the internal variable prefs.autospeakSelectedCharacter which I believe is triggered internally using KEY_CMD_ASPK_INS_CHARS from another program which is using brltty as a screen reader.
