OK, how woulld I specify to stay as root in the brltty.conf?

Also, here is the log, there is a lot, but you should see it cycling.

No. We'd need a log to analyze. There's no point in guessing when no other users (that we know of) of the same driver aren't having such a problem.

I'm not sure how you're starting it now. If it's already not starting as root then you'll need to figure out what to do within your own environment. If, however, it's starting as root and then dropping to being unprivileged then you could add the -z - --stay-privileged - command line option. This can also be specified within brltty.conf.
