This shouldn't happen if you log in as root and run run-brltty directly. Could you please verify that you tried it exactly this way?

This should be fixable. First, could you try removing the libncursesw5-dev package? If that works then try installing libncurses-dev. If that works then edit Tools/reqpkgs.d/debian, find the line that says libncursesw5-dev, remove the w5 part, and save the file. Then run reqpkgs.
If all of this is successful then you'll need th configure brltty again to pick up the change. Then do the make.
