Okay, I see why. It's because, in input mode, Left Space is mapped to Control so using it in combination with a typed character - any combination of dot keys - it's a valid keyboard combination so wnn't be interpreted as a binding.

You can always see what that character actually is by using DESCCHAR. On an Actilino, that'd be:

   describe character: B2+RoutingKey

I'd have to look up the code to verify (it was written several years ago) but I think those need to be done in input mode. Please test this and let me know.
