Which version of brltty are you using?
I can answer questions about brltty itself but am not a GUI user so can't add any insights based on experience with that environment and/or xfce. I'm hoping that others will comment on these.

The first thing you should be sure of is to capture logs from both brltty instances, i.e. the main one and the a2 one. Make sure that each is writing to a different log file.
The log categories should be: debug, brldrv, server, usb, inpkts, outpkts
Note that I've assumed you're using USB. If you're using Bluetooth then enable bt rather than usb.
Also, please let us know at what time the hang occurred so that we can more easily find the right place in both logs.
