I have a problem very similar to the one you reported. When i try to connect my alva braille to a booting live ( I.E. Knoppix) the display beeps, beeps and beeps again, but the connection doesn't initializze. I think it's a problem in the kernel they compile, that includes too many things so that the serial ports may have problems.
