Hi Nico,
a) why not thinking about a system where the 5 in numlock-off should 
permit to switch to a mode where speech can be used ?
b) why not a driver for speech only where the nav keys of a 
azerty/qwerty kbd can pilote the speech?
c) why not having a look at BRASS since this can use brailel only, 
braille+speech, or speech only? cf. Roger Butenuth's site at 
http://butenuth.onlinehome.de/blinux/
d) I not remember if speech only was already possible under JABT but 
this only concerns the Alva displays (cf. http://jlemmens.nl)
