I think what I'd like to see is an strace of the failure. That's done like 
this:

   strace -o brltty.trace -f brltty ...

The -o option tells strace where to write the trace. The -f option tells it to
follow forks. The rest of the command line, i.e. brltty ..., is the command you
want to trace (where ... means whatever brltty options you want to specify).
