There was a similar problem fixed in BRLTTY last year: some Handytech displays
were using a USB->serial chip without changing the vendor/product ID to make
it unique to the braille display. Code was introduced into BRLTTY to work
around this, but the serial adapter involves wasn't the same as the one
reported above.

I know this doesn't solve it, but I hope it at least helps to narrow down the
problem. The next question is whether that fix was generic or just a
work-around for the particular case, and which version of BRLTTY it went into.
