You're probably checking out the development stream. If you want to build from 
scratch then you can check out 3.8 at:

   svn://mielke.cc/releases/brltty-3.8

If you want to use a tarball instead, you can download that at:

   http://mielke.cc/brltty/releases/brltty-3.8.tar.gz

Do you mean that you don't like the key combinations, or that you have to press 
them over and over again in order to finally get a response?
