Note that one profile per program is the way Windows screen readers work, 
and Windows is a vastly more complicated environment than the Unix console.

As for the Alsa mixer, I put the display on the bottom of the occupied part 
of the window, where I can see the results of arrowing right and left 
(selecting a different slider) and go straight up to see the results of the 
up and down arrows (adjusting the levels).
