That's attribute underlining. It's definitely the more useful of the two by 
far.

That's the mode where each of the eight dots represents one of the eight VGA 
attributes. It's useful when you want to determine exactly how a particular 
area of the screen is highlighted. In the normal case, of course, wherein the 
whole screen is white on black, it's incredibly boring.

The t means that brltty is presenting regular text. You can actually configure 
what your status cells show via the preferences menu. Find the part which shows 
the "status fields". By all means let us know if there's something else you'd 
like to see that these selectors don't offer yet.
