The reason is that brltty's maintainer doesn't particularly like automake. 
Perhaps, of course, that's just because he's too ignorant to know how great it 
is. Really, though, he finds it a bit too mystical.

probably not, unless, of course, you can convince the above-mentioned person as 
to why it'd be worth the endeavour. It's entirely possible that he's just 
stubbornly clinging to his old ways. There was a time, after all, when he 
thought he didn't like autoconf. What do you see as the reasons that such a 
transformation should be undertaken?
