You can run it under BSD, Solaris etc., using a patched version of GNU Screen.

Those systems don't have virtual consoles, as far as I know. Linux is much
better from an accessibility standpoint.

Since nobody else appears to be experiencing your problem, I'd suggest it is
specific to your hardware or system configuration, and your best option is to
report it either to Debian or to the kernel developers if you're sure that
it's kernel-related.
