Does hciconfig say that the hci0 interface is up and that it has a Bluetooth 
device address?

Assuming the answer is yes, you probably still need to pair the device with the 
host.

I'm sure they, as well as plenty of other users, have. I don't think there's 
any cause for concern in this area.

Here's where you may have a bit of a problem. Unfortunately, there's no command 
line interface (that I'm aware of) for pairing a Bluetooth device. It has to be 
done within the graphical environment.
