In a recent discussion I was engaged in on the linux-usb mailing list, GKH 
mentioned that there are stable names under /dev/serial. My system doesn't have 
it, so it may be new, but, since I'm sure he knows what he's talking about, 
perhaps, if ones system is new enough, it's there.
