Have you tried leaving the system up but stopping and restarting brltty?

Can you capture a debug log of the problem? To do this, use -L (uppercase) to
point to a log file, and use -l (lowercase) to specify what should be logged.
What should be logged,in this case, given that you're not using the latest
developemnt code, would be: debug,ingio,inpkts,outpkts

>I am using the brltty release used in Vinux 4.0. I'm not sure of the release
>number? Is there a way to find it after boot-up?

You can run brltty with the -V (uppercase) option. You can even do this while
it's already running. It displays version inforemation and then exits.

>I don't think I have a text configuration file.

If you don't already have /etc/brltty.conf then create it. It's an optional
file. After you create it, put in it whatever you wish to have as defaults.

>Why isn't the setting in the preferences menu permanent?

The table selections certainly could be. They weren't, originally, because the
original preferences file format was binary and it wasn't worth the effort to
invent a way to store variable-length entries within it. The new format is
textual, and, in fact, it's very easy to add new settings to it. So, now, the
only excuse is that it hasn't been done yet.
