Then try starting brltty like  this:

brltty -b bl -d usb:<num>

Where <num> is the number of the usb serial port that was created when
you plugged in the usb serial addapter.

Also, you should edit /etc/brltty.conf and give it the proper display
and port options, as well as the text-table, atributes, and contraction
table you want to use.
