You don't need to wait for that. Just build from the latest development code. 
Yes, it'd be a good exercise.

There are notes in the Source Repository section of brltty's Download page for
building.

The latest code does recognize the four scroll keys, although, unfortunately, 
they aren't correctly mapped. I know what the fix is, though, and shall make 
that correction after 5.3 is released.
