This most probably has nothing to do with that but this reminds me this
sentence in the specification for sed:

"Some of the editing commands use a hold space to save all or part of the
pattern space for subsequent retrieval. The pattern and hold spaces shall
each be able to hold at least 8192 bytes."

So an implementation of sed *could* set a limit to 8192 bytes,
although at least G?U sed doesn't.

Just a shot in the dark (I have no easy access to Internet at
the moment and didn't read the whole thread, sorry to be
noisy)
