Were you also experiencing any crashes that need to be figured out? Brltty 
should never crash, regardless of what the situation is.

For basic commmunication problems - assuming USB - this should be enough:

   -ldebug,usb,inpkts,outpkts,brldrv

Substitute serial or bluetooth for usb as appropriate.
