We've returned from a longish out of town trip, and I'm now retrying to install
brltty on a new machine. The previous posting was as follows:

Hi, I've managed to get my friend's Linux setup to access his Power Braille 80 successfully,
and I'm now trying to get the system preferences set up to what he prefers. I have read
through the documentation on preferences and set some of them in the config file. Is there
a way to reverse the functions of the two rocker bars on the Power Braille 80? I haven't
been able to find a configuration entry that controls that preference. Thanks!

What do you mean by preferences? There are system-wide defaults (that are
defined in /etc/ brltty .conf), and there are user-specific settings (that are
stored in /var/lib/ brltty / brltty .prefs). It's the latter - the user-specific
settings - that are commonly known as preferences because they can be (and
really should be) modified from the braille device itself via brltty 's
Preferences Menu. There's a way to do it from brltty .conf - with the
override-preference directive - but that should only be done when absolutely
necessary because it undoes changes made within the menu.

You can do that by editing the key table for the PB80. Assuming a normal
install, you should be able to find it at:

/etc/ brltty /Input/ts/pb80.ktb

End of BRLTTY Digest, Vol 14, Issue 95
**************************************
I used the Debian apt tool to install brltty from the debian repository;
running the brltty command yields a version of 5.4. The
operating system is Debian Linux 9.4.
1.) I opened
/etc/brltty/Input/ts/pb80.ktb
with nano, and found five lines:
title Power Braille 80
assign routingRight1 81
assign routingRight2 82
assign routingRight3 79
include pb_large.kti
Neither I nor my friend understands what these entries refer to,
and none mentions a rocker switch. What parameters should I
change to reverse the rocker bar settings? Since I'm seven hours from
his home in Chicago at the moment and could not connect a PB80
to test or access the preferences file to see if that preference was there,
I tried looking in /var/lib/brltty, but did not find brltty.prefs at all.
2.) Also, to insure that the PB80 display starts at boot, I added the lines

braille-driver ts

braille-device serial:ttyS0

to

/etc/brltty.conf.

Then, per another entry in the documentation, I edited

/etc/default/brltty as follows:

ARGUMENTS="-q -b ts -d /dev/ttyS0"

Am I correct in assuming that these changes will automatically

start brltty at boot?

Thanks again for all your support.
