In the Canute's case, I suspect it's because it has several lines (I forget how
many at the moment). Not sure what the trade-off was, but it might've been both
less cost and more lines.

In the brailleMe's case, it was definitely cost. It's manufacturer is in India
and the guy wanted to make a braille device that was as easy as possible for
all blind people in his country to afford. It's interesting in that it doesn't
use piezo-electric crystal pins.
