very old thread, but still actual for me because I try to work more with the 
terminal in Mate than using normal text console...

Maybe I'll try the patch but somewhere deep in my brain I remember that you 
have build packages for Debian Bullseye with this patch included. Do I 
remember this right and if yes, where can I find those packages?

In the issue I can see no update :-(. Does this mean that there is no 
progress yet?
