I meant to add that I am on version 6.4. It's the latest version on Ubuntu
MATE 22.04. Does that version support the HID of the Brailliant BI40X?

Try adding the -bhw option in case that makes a difference. If this resolves
the problem then please do let us know.
Which version of brltty are you using? Support for the newer HW models was
added somewhat recently.
