That's why the brltt-tmux command exists. It goes through the necessary mechaics to firgure out which VT you're on. It needs to be run as root for that, though, so if you ddidn't start tmux as root then use brltt-tmux's -s (sudo) option. Note that this only works for the top-most tmux session.
