Are you trying to learn the TeX language itself, or a macro system built on
top of it such as LaTeX? Most people write documents using LaTeX unless they
have very specific typesetting needs that can best be met by writing in plain
TeX.

LaTeX is fairly easy to learn unless you want to write complex page layouts.
TeX itself is more complicated.

To learn LaTeX there are numerous online tutorials and references. 
For TeX itself, the best source is the TeXbook by Donald E. Knuth, which is
available for download in TeX format.
