[BRLTTY] .config.mk: no such file or directory

Since I've been busy with Macosx, I haven't been using my linux machines a 
lot. Now I find that I can't compile brltty, which I have updated by svn. 
Am running debian testing. On both of my machines, when I run "make", I 
get:

Makefile:32: .config.mk: no such file or directory
make: *** no rule to make target `.config.mk'. Stop.

I have this terrible suspicion it must be something obvious I've left off 
my systems, but I haven't been able to find the problem. Would somebody 
please explain to me what I'm missing?
