I'd rather not do it if it's awkward. Since neither shift nor control means 
anything with space, we could make pressing those keys on their own, i.e. 
without any dot keys, be space, and pressing them with dot keys mean shift and 
control. Would that be too confusing?

Where are they on the device? How easy is it to press them in conjuction with 
other keys?

Yes, that's why. That doesn't mean we can't use them, though. I, as usual, am 
always wide open to suggestions.
