At this point we don't know whether it's the serial to USB converter or the
adapter that you've connected to it.

I have a Belkin serial to USB device which seems to work (at least when I plug
in a DECTALK synthesizer or connect to the console port of my router, which I
know isn't a conclusive test for all of the serial lines). I'll connect it up
tomorrow and obtain the product name if that would help.

Kernel support for serial to USB converters exists, but a driver has to be
written separately for each chip since there is no standard in this area. As a
result, support isn't as reliable as it ought to be.
