Yes, and there you have (again) the documentation about starting the
installer in text mode.  Just append what I said on the command line
_before_ pressing enter.

But you missed typing the parameter to set the text mode...

So it entered framebuffer mode...

When I talked about memory, that was for the Ubuntu liveCD, which needs
quite a lot of memory (512 should be fine). The debian installer is fine
with even 64M.
