For the moment I am using a non-virtual machine.  HOwever when I do 
testing of things that are as vital to my machine continuing to be of use 
to me for day-to-day use I tend to at least do a first check on a virual 
machine or in some way isolate it.  I don't have a machine at the moment 
that I can afford to have down while I repair it although I can stop one 
version of brltty and start the development version with relative ease so 
if I need to test on the host machine it is not a disaster.  Just that 
experience teaches me that esting of system type software is best done in 
an isolated manner from the host machine.  As long as I am convinced that 
the dev software breaks none of the major funtioality I don't have a 
problem running in on my host.
