[BRLTTY] brltty only partially running

So I compiled with these options:
./configure --with-braille-driver=bl --with-braille-device=/dev/ttyS0 --with-speech-driver-sd
I hear speech but no braille on the braille lite. Baud rate 9600 software handshake.
It says in the manual to use something called brltest but there is no such file anywhere. What to do now?
