That looks good.

Do you have a text table defined? Does it have a mapping for just dot 1 
(presumably the letter a)? A good way to test this is to check if output is 
working. Does your braille display show just dot 1 for the letter a?

Are you using Linux? If so, are you running brltty as root? If it's not running 
as root then it may not be able to insert characters.
