Am I correct, then, that you're using the X environment? If so, then the problem is most likely that xbrlapi isn't running. X has its own way of reading what's being typed. Brltty doesn't handle that directly, but, rather, needs xbrlapi to be monitoring the X keyboard and sending it, via BrlAPI, what's being typed. You'd also need Orca running in order for the X environment to be interpreted correctly.

You might try going to brltty.app, clicking on Documentation, and then on BRLTTY with X11.
