It describes itself as the "Free and Open Source Android App Repository". I'm
using half a dozen applications from it, mainly because they are free as in
freedom. There are more of these free repositories, but F-Droid is AFAIK the
most common one. And I do also like not being fully dependent on Google ;).

In contrast to distributing applications as APK, F-Droid will alert me that I
can install an update.
